Dylan Ratigan, former anchor of Fast Money and Closing Bell on CNBC

Dang! There went the life of CNBC, the only guy with a little spark let in him, one of the few that didn't seem to be a "spokesman" for the same corporate 'america' that has raped and pillaged us into multi-generational bankruptcy. The one skeptic who seems to think that giving the crooks more money to replace the money they've stolen is probably not the best idea, in spite of what they tell Congress.

Ratigan, who holds a degree in political economics, came to CNBC after working for Bloomberg News. Here is his bio at CNBC: Dylan Ratigan Bio

We'll sorely miss Dylan here, in spite of being named after the whiniest singer in the history of music, this 'Irish' Dylan was anything but a whiner. It's rumored he's going to ABC. Here's a story on Yahoo to that effect.

Good grief, Charlie Brown! Enough already...

After being up pretty much the whole time since starting last February, we've finally let the portfolio turn negative, but only by 15k or 1.5%. That's still beating the SP500 by a wide margin, and we could turn back positive again tomorrow.

I think I was listening to the cheerleading on tv and had too many longs at the bottom here, and they still can plunge even more. It never seems to pay to get too optimistic. Yet, isn't that what they expect us to do? Cover all their dumb moves and losses, and smile and be happy hard-working tax-paying citizens again, so they can lose more money doing the same old things?

Stem Cell Stocks Surge After Election

Stem cell and selected biotech stocks started moving when Obama won the election. Geron (GERN) was 3.50 then, near 8.00 now. Stemcells (STEM) has gone from 1.50 to 2.50. It could be a temporary reaction pop, but since he gave approval to Geron to inject stem cells into humans with spinal cord injuries, with tests beginning in the summer, most insiders expect more favorable announcements in the future.

The next step will be to remove the ban on using federal funds to fund stem cell research, reversing eight years of anti-progress policy from the Bush administration. After that, he'll be free to allocate some federal funds for stem cell research, giving these stocks a boost yet again.

It's a little revenue, small cap sector, so be careful. Here's a link to get you started doing more research before investing.

Using fincls, we crossed 1.2m today (up 12k more) - took some profit, and held onto a loser in FXP (short China)...

Have lots of cash 'ready', this could break either way again, as we've witnessed... the underlying fincls of the economy are still weak no matter how much money they throw at the credit mkts, hence my overweighting of fincls lately...

sold AAPL today to take profit... GS may be next, it's run up quite a bit recently...

[After a summer hiatus! on the postings anyway... still trading the fund, which is now at 1.17m, up 64k today or 6%]

We've surged to a good gain in the group port lately holding some short funds: FXP (China), EEV (Emrg mkts), SKF (fincl's), QID (Nasdaq).... we've also been short FNM for an 85k gain right there (ouch, but going to zero?) - so we're at 1117k with ony about half invested

Now may be looking to bargain hunt, after taking some profits - GS (Goldman Sachs) looks good around 100, wish I'd gotten some today on the dip to 97 - now have order in to buy at 105.50, hoping for a 5% pullback in the a.m., then we get some...

When we get a surge like the last two days in the port, I always take profit like the FM guys say - when you get a quick 8-20%, take it - at least part of it, like trimming some positions in half, or keeping the positions without the aberrant gains...

the SRS (short real estate) should be another good fincl short to get...

Note: This may be my last full “recap” blog for Fast Money, it’s just taking too much time. I may go to just a summary of stock buys, sells, avoids.

Jeff once again said “happy to own USO”. Dennis Gartman is now avoiding oil and consumer stocks, but like alt energy, and would even own airlines for short trade. Guy still likes AMR with a stop at 6.00. All would avoid casinos, cost more to get there now, no excess consumer money for gambling, etc…

AAPL popped 3-4 pts Friday, the traders would “sell on the new iPhone news”, which was suspected to come out around June 9th. They noted another “swoon” apparently on in broker stocks. Jeff said “stocks don’t bottom on Fridays”. Jon Najarian noticed heavy put buying in LEH, would short it.

For summer “beer trades”: Guy like SAM (tasty!), Jeff likes TAP (made with Rocky Mtn tap water?), Tim likes overseas brewer ATV.

Pops and Drops
Avoid: CHL (more competition), CHK (dilution), FDX, MAS, HAS, airlines (0ff 20% for the wk)
Buy dip: HD, JPM, BNK, solar (some would avoid)

Jon Najarian was sitting in for Pete, noticed put buying in etf DBC, which has 60% in energy components. Tim said "be skeptical of the IEA, they speak for the US government". He could've added the IMF (Int Monetary Fund) and World Bank and many other bogus "world organizations"; the US controls 51% of the IMF and uses it to enforce "free markets" in places like Argentina, by refusing loans unless they make concessions, like cutting labor wages and letting US corporations in to gouge citizens on critical utilities like water and electricity (they did this in England as well, until Thatcher stepped in an nationalized water utilities; prices had risen 400% with US corporations in control.) So much for the "free market" experiments; Argentina had riots and death squads as a result, so don't believe the propaganda put out by Kudlow and other right-wingers, the current oil crisis shows the results, with gasoline costing a QUARTER in countries without "free market" corporations to gouge the citizens. The ultimate results are either regulations or revolutions. This is all known history, if people here would learn to read rather than watch corporate-media owned tv, which censors the truth if it criticizes corporate power.

Jeff and Jon reiterated to AVOID any stocks or sectors which respond negatively to "good news". LTD and PLCE were up on good earnings surprises. (another kid's retailer, GYMB, has also been strong this year like PLCE, which had a boost from a half-hearted takeover offer from the CEO.)

The traders also see casinos hurting this summer along with consumers, also higher-priced dining like steak houses (Mortons and Ruths Criss or whatever the stupid name is, like "Fifth Third Bancorp", which Karen says is the "stupidest name ever"). Jeff would sell Hertz (HTZ) for the summer. "You couldn't drag me behind a car on an electric leash this summer", he said, adding "My kids will travel to the living room to watch Disney and play video games". He would buy WMT and DIS.

Analyst John d’Agostino said shipping rates are way up, all ships are full in both directions, from Brazil to China, then back to the U.S. with Asian goods. No one mentioned that DRYS was off nearly 10% today. Jeff says the higher rates are inflationary in themselves.

Guy says buy PCLN when it drops on 5m shares in one day. Jon would buy cruise lines (are you kidding?) Dylan noted that ISRG was up after hours, which will replace Bear Stearns in the SP500. It wasn’t already in there?

Fast Oil Money - Wednesday 5.21

The traders scoffed that the price of of oil caused the market plunge today, saying it was more likely the spate of bad earnings. Pete said tech stocks panicked today, especially after volatility spiked near the close. He did say FTO was getting call buying and he would buy it here, but no other refiners. Nat gas etf UNG actually held its gains and rose 4% today. Karen would buy C here on the dive. …but others say, why rush into any financials?

Guy would buy airliner AMR here on the dip, with a 6.00 stop. Several would buy WMT before earnings. Pete (and Karen) like VCLK, again call buying, while Karen likes the space as “potential takeovers”. Pete also reiterated ANR and WLT in the coal space. What, no ACI or KOL?

The OIH (oil service etf) was “hurt by rising costs”. Did Dennis Gartman say “short of oil” now? Long natural gas… (Disclosure: I’m now long UNG). Pete likes steel, that “no one wins but crude” with these prices. Hey, join the WORLD COMMUNITY, guys: OPEC wins big, all those countries we love to hate, the “idiot socialists” someone called Chavez, for creating gasoline for a QUARTER for his citizens, rather than give the profits to Exxon and Chevron – yep, that sounds pretty idiotic to me as well, I’d rather keep getting those 3% dividends and more Alaskan pollution from Exxon myself, that’s more “capitalist”, therefore American. Call me “J.P.”, not “Che” ;-)

The traders tossed around possible candidate effects on industry sectors; basically, pro defense if anyone is there (why not, we spend 2/3 of the world’s expenditure on our own defense, hence no Pearl Harbors since… well, 9/11/01 – was it that recent? Oh well, I guess it makes us feel safer…). Of course, Obama would be better for alternative energy – the usual drivel. Let’s face it, Republicans send the market up and the economy and jobs down, every time, regardless what the talking heads say. The rich get richer, and since they own the media we have to hear about it every day, from folks like Larry Kudlow and Donny Deustche, who made enough money to buy their own tv shows - heck, so did Cramer, at least he made his by trading stock; of course, due to fraud he's not allowed to trade now; same with Luis Ruykeyser, who did prison time for stock fraud and was rewarded with his own financial show.

Joe Terranova sat in for Karen, off helping the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson’s, which my mother also had, so check out his foundation online. The market was hit hard today, basically running into technical resistance, the price of oil, and more bad retail numbers, this time from Low’s, and Home Depot (HD) today. Joe thinks we’ll now trade sideways, sees the SP going to 1390. After hours, PVH and RRGB were also down, along with HD.

The traders still found some stuff that’s working. Pete said “high tech”, though the anemic gains in the stocks he mentioned (AAPL, RIMM, GOOG) were barely worth touting. Guy said TRN was a buy, Joe T likes RIG (which I’m long).

Jeff says the rest of the world will go down with the U.S., and Pete noticed put buying in EEM (Emerging Markets etf) today. He also said the China only has 3 days worth of coal, so that’s still a buy. He say call buying in HNT.

Guest Jon Najarian thinks that financials will drop, the XLF should dip to 24+. In spite of that, both Joe T and Pete like GS due to their energy trading. Guy likes HXL, TRN, HAL as energy plays. Jeff likes YUM, saying people will stay home and snack while playing video games. (but Jeff, you have to drive to get YUM foods: Taco Bell, Long John Silver’s, etc – only Pizza Hut delivers). Pete also likes DD and CSIQ as energy plays.

For summer buys: Pete likes Amerigas, Jeff: CROX, Guy: SPH. Guy likes FCX, from viewer mail, rather than shorting gold.

Monday, May 19, 2008: Dow +41 at 13028 __ Nasdaq off 12.7 at 2516 __ SP500 +1.3 at 1427

There was a mixed market, which had a nice rally apparently killed by the CEO of SNDK who complained about “high energy costs hitting consumers”. The traders were skeptical of this, saying “any excuse to sell a weak market”, Jeff said the SP was at resistance, but a chart vs the 200-dma showed the SP comfortably ABOVE the 200 day moving avg, so that killed his own argument.

The traders were mixed over which deal would occur first, MSFT-YHOO or ERTS-TTWO. Is anyone else totally tired of the Microsoft-Yahoo talk? Someone suggested that MSFT is over-valued. (What about YHOO?).

Guy likes HD, hopes it misses so people can buy on a pullback; Karen is still long this. Guy still ikes rail brake mfctr WAB. He says take profit in hard drive maker WDC; someone said buy INTC on pullbacks.

DIS was downgraded due to a poor opening in Prince Caspian; Jeff still wants to be long, said it’s a “trade vs a long-term investment” call.

Guest tech analyst Quint Tatro (wasn’t he a Gunsmoke character?) sees technical break-outs in TNH, CSTR, and GLW. The traders prefer GLW, but Jeff likes CSTR, as a trade here (so that’s like the #1 “avoid”, lol…) I like the high yield in fertilizer stock TNH.

Summer trades: Jeff likes WMT and COST; Pete would dive into POOL; Karen would apply AGN for skin protection, Guy likes ZQK after earnings, a suitmaker to hide his “bird legs” with a surfing suit.

Tim Seymour would stay long emerging markets but buy puts to protect profits, as the EEM fund is now back to positive for 2008, due to upgrades in steel, coal, other commodities. He also said “look at AMX and MBT”, with earnings coming soon. Turkey starting to break out (TKF), also Russia (RSX), up 15% for the month.

Traders said to “play the trend” (isn’t it figuring out which one to follow the problem?), buy oil services such as BHI and HAL. Pete said they were selling calls in YHOO, have a low ceiling on it now. Karen said cheers for Icahn, whatever that meant. Guy says buy the dips in hard drive maker WDC. Guy and Pete would still buy defense stock RTN. Guy would buy C with a 22.50 stop, Karen said “I like that trade”.

Pete still likes rails and shippers, mentioned DRYS and DSX [Disclosure: I’m long EXM, up 7.5% on Friday!] Guy still likes DD due to valuation vs other ag stocks (I sold my CF). Pete likes SOLF, up 23.8% Friday, sees lots of option buying. Funny, they all keep laughing at Solarfun, then the day that it’s already up almost 24%, suddenly it’s a buy from Pete at least. Hey, thanks for the warning! [Disclosure: I’m long FSLR, JASO, and TAN, the solar etf]

New regulations closed the “Enron” loophole, oil traders cannot take on as much speculation as before, so this caused a pullback in oil.

INTC jumped on rumors of a new chip called “Adam” (the first chip? This moniker makes no sense; “pente” was Greek for five, so Pentium made some sense.)

In a beverage segment the trades liked: TAP (Jeff), KO (Pete), HANS (Guy), and Tim (for Karen) liked FMX and ABV. Before an upcoming biotech conference, Pete says to watch CELG, MDRX, and DNA.

Wednesday, May 14, 2008: Dow +66 at 12,898 __ Nasdaq +1.6 at 2497 __ SP500 +3.6 at 1409

Fast Money spent a lot of useless time on the Icahn attempt to get a board elected for YHOO, but no one seemed to want to buy the stock. Zzzzz… YHOO was up after hours, along with GE and Agilent (A).

Tech sold off around 3-3:30pm and took the market with it, killing a big rally, the Dow went from +150 to +66 at the close while the Nas gained 1.6 pts. Apple, Rimm, and Google all sold off dramatically at the end of the day. The OIH also fell in the last hour.

Pete says “ag was still working today”, but it wasn’t – my index was off .5% as Deere (DE) fell 9.9%, one day after Dennis Gartman said he covered his short (was he lying or is he this bad a stock timer? You would think he would “know something” and would have held on until earnings.)

Guest Joe Terranova thinks the oil moves are related to futures expirations (gee, what else is new?). A chart showed that it drops after the US sell some of the strategic reserves (held for war basically, like WW2 is gonna roll around again), and rises after the US adds to the reserve.

In defense stocks, Guy likes HON, RTN, and LMT (best). Pete likes RTN also. They make the Patriot missiles, one of which hit the hotel where journalists were staying in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War! (they say error, I think an attempt to wipe out “liberal journalists”!)

In a segment on living in the future, the traders like EMC, PEP (zzzz) and CY (“and you get Sunpower too” says Pete). Tim likes Turkey, says it’s the cheapest emerging market, at a PE of 9 due to the troubles with the Kurds in the south, also Islamic politicians in the capital. (I believe they won the election and the military refused to let them take power because many Muslims moved to Istanbul to control the elections.) Tim likes TKC, TKF, and I think he said “TUR”, a new etf.

The traders noted that market volatility has been going down, “sucked out as fast as it rose”.

Gartman as live guest, said covered DE short (was a mistake he says). Flat oil (thought he was short?). Added "if something should be lower but it's not, its going higher", so he's long copper (traders like FCX for copper).

Tech and financials led the market higher. The traders like MSFT and INTC still (Guy). Pete says RIMM got good news (and hit an alltime high), Jeff says AAPL benefits, buy both. HPQ and EDS were halted, say they’re talking “possibilities”, Pete said just before halting some calls popped from .10 to 2.00 each, so someone leaked the news, someone else benefitted. On a trading the future segment, Pete says the robotic medical equipment is just currently too expensive, such as ISRG, though HNSN was cheaper, same former CEO as ISRG. Tim likes VIP in Russia, political reasons but the telecom industry. He also likes BIDU, various reasons (China and a chart breakout).

Oil pulled back, the guest analyst sees that and the sector are headed down, prefers alt energy stocks like solar, smaller cap like ENER (too late!); Pete noted the heavy short interest. He also likes EMKR, but his company makes a market in both; can you say “inventory dump coming”? Apparently Chinese oil imports are down.

The guest tech analyst likes dry shipper DRYS on a breakout, sees it going to 120; Guy warns “its highly volatile”. The same analyst like EP (El Paso) another breakout, up to 24, and OII. All on chart breakouts.

After hours, Fedex (FDX) was off on profit warnings due to fuel, taking UPS down also. Jeff thinks “buy the dips”; never heard him say this before (LOL). C will try to reduce 20% of its balance sheet, Karen is long, thinks the worst is over here. Pete still prefers V, MA and adds AXP as the next buy in the credit card space.

Karen Finerman (value girl or money slut?) fantasy flame Carl Icahn will buy Circuit City (CC), if Blockbuster doesn’t. Jeff says the B-buster deal would be “like holding hands and jumping off the cliff together”. Goldman Sachs put BKC on its buy list, removing MCD, echoed by Pete, who also said there was call buying in AES (already up big today).

The Fast Money traders seem to agree that oil service stocks are better than oil or integrated companies right now. Pete again said to buy JOYG and BUCY. Guy said if you want integrated, he prefers COP to XOM, much lower valuation. [Disclosure: I’m long COP]. Guest Joe Terranova said he was bullish on oil, said “just buy five and include the USO”.

Today, solar stock Energy Conversion Devices (ENER), jumped 43% when they had .17 eps while analysts expected a loss. Pete is long, and didn’t sell any yet.
ENER drove up my solar index 3.3%. Guy says buy FCX as a copper play. Pete likes BKC more than MCD. Guy says art sell BID (Sotheby’s) may be a buy here, the recession hasn’t hurt those wealthy enough to buy expensive art.

After hours, AIG was off about 3-4 pts after nearly doubling the expected loss per share. Someone said to buy this dip in C, and Guy we know likes WB, also off 3-5% lately.

The traders said “the markets hate intervention”, meaning we’ll sell the heck out of it or at least drive down prices if the feds threaten us in any way. They blamed oil, CSCO, and SEC head Cox for the big decline today. Pete said the XLF only held 27 two days then broke below that resistance today. They said (surprise), “wait a few days, buy the dip.”

Dennis Gartman said he should be long oil, instead is short that, long natural gas and losing money on that trade. The IMF will sell 430 TONS of gold, I noticed in a non-mentioned news banner! Yikes, that’s enough for a few hundred wedding brides in India! (430 to be exact!)

Pete says watch ENER earnings tomorrow, into thin film like FSLR. Guy says buy WFR with a stop at 62 (why buy an under performer? It’s been hammered). Dylan asked if solar got way ahead in 2007, showing a FSLR chart, up 840% in 07 (!) Tim recommended some Russian stocks again: RSX (etf), GZPFY, VIP, CTCM.

The Fast Money traders were so impressed with the blog that they had my question on viewer Email, about the collapse of SNCR. They cut my clever “why the disconnect” comment re it and AAPL however. Jeff says they guided way down and that the AT&T discount on iPhones only applies if you come into their stores, so this also hurts SNCR, apparently they aren’t activating those phones. I asked because I’m long Apple, I got out of SNCR long ago, in the 30’s. Tonight it was trimmed to 12 after hours, nearly half off.

Bigger earnings came after hours, and the traders agreed they’d rather own DIS than CSCO after the eps news on each (small beats by each, CSCO’s guidance wasn’t as optimistic so it was having trouble staying up after hours, and is looking like a selloff waiting to happen.)

They had a chart that showed the market reverse with FNM today and follow it higher. Karen says there was no reason, FNM’s fincancial report “was dismal”, she sold some and would sell it here on the pop.

EP had call buying, says Pete, who would buy it, another natural gas play; he and Karen wish they still had CHK (which I’m long). Pete said the news on CEPH was gloomy, Guy says buy MRK instead. In housing, they mentioned the XHB, but Karen prefers USG, Guy still likes HD.

In a segment on family owned corporations, they generally agreed to avoid them but for a few exceptions: F at this level, WWE after a 30% crushing on EPS, and Guy likes BUD with Augie Busch the 4th (or 14th?) now at the helm.

They see financials going down mostly on BAC and C. In tech, Jeff says sell CSCO, but buy the dips after earnings, and buy HAS due to the toy ties to the new “Iron Man” movie. Guy likes cleaning products maker Church and Dwight (CHD), while Jeff like TAP for its beer, buy any dip.

The traders were “lukewarm on the financial data.” The traders are “tired of waiting” on MSFT and YHOO, saying once again “do the deal”. (This was before MSFT dropped their bid for YHOO this weekend.)

Tim ("Pretty Boy" when he's not there, "Mr. Ambassador" when he is!) was sitting in for Pete ("The Pit Boss"), says short some commodities by shorting the DBA etf, also to sell XOM and buy COP (a “pairs trade”?) He also likes these emerging market stocks: INFY and TSM in tech. Later he mentioned (in a segment on media) these em media stocks: CETV, CTCM, and NETC. Jeff likes HAS in the media connected area, toys based on big films. He’s still long ATVI (?), while I thought he said “sell” long ago. The video game trade was “ended” long ago right? In the ERTS vs TTWO fight, he prefers ERTS. Based on the success of his MSFT and YHOO meandering, I’d avoid this altogether! Hey Jeff, go back to Minyanville! (that’s his financial website).

Guest Dick "Shady" Bove now likes Citicorp [C] a lot, which Karen is long also. He thinks it can double from here. Guy ("The Negotiator") likes “Wacky Bank” (WB), already up 25% from 24 t0 30; and all they had to do was slash their dividend and write off 4 billion in non-performing loans. Wow, it’s gotten too easy to make your stock go up nowdays! I can do even worse, gimme a half a trillion to play with like these banks!

The financials held the important resistance of 27 that Pete’s keeps mentioning. The SP is right at the 1410 resistance that Guy talks about. Tomorrow can be either a typical failure and pullback, or an important breakthrough. Jeff thinks it’ll pull back; I think they’ll push it through and hold it (maybe after 2pm) for the weekend investors. C, AXP, WB (“Wacky bank”) and GS are showing strength in the financial index. Watch XLF to see if it holds the 27 price.

Jeff thinks you can buy USO at 110 support, but would still short GLD. Turns out there’s the DZZ double-short etf we can use. If the dollars continues its strength, use the etf UUP to go long vs a basket of currencies. RTH (retail etf) was up on HD, which is closing some poorly performing stores.

The general trade seems to be out of commodities and into tech and financials. Pete thinks tech is at fair value, but financials are undervalued.

Pete noted that the XLF (financials) failed at resistance again, 27, which has now tested and failed 7 times. Jeff says any Fed numbers are irrelevant, because they’ll say whatever they want. (They’re always revised later anyway.)

FSLR was up on a big eps beat. The group says to watch oil (they still like COP), if it falls it’ll “kill solar”. Dennis Gartman says oil is too high, prefers natural gas. He also says rice, wheat, gold all failed at highs, should all sell off, which he says “is healthy”. The dollar is going up due to “too many shorts”, he says.

Pete likes GA, a Chinese online game company, due to high online numbers over the weekend (yep, that sounds “trustworthy”, when they don’t trust the Compustat numbers for online ad clicks here!). GM was up 9% on a “lower loss than expected”, Guy prefers F, and parts maker BWA (yet again!).

Karen bought C today (yesterday no one wanted it due to more stock dilution), thinks the worst is over, they have enough capital, Doug Kass emailed in agreement, he covered his four year short, went long. Guy says buy T, Jeff says buy AAPL. Tim as a guest says the dollar has bottomed, esp vs the Euro, the Brazil pop was mostly short covering and raised ratings, likes the banks BBD and ITU (UBB not as much), due to more access to capital.

Fast Money was so boring today that I “heard them now, but did not listen later” (Hans and Frans). Citicorp was down after hours after announcing a new stock sale to raise 3 billion; no traders liked this move.

Dennis Gartman pronounced the end of the commodity bubble, perhaps he was responsible for the 5% drop in AG stocks. He says he would short DE here. He said the money was moving to tech, get long tech here.

The traders still like natural gas, but like CHK (Pete), APA and XTO (Guy, but buy dips) rather than the ETF for the commodity, UNG. Someone likes DUG here, up today. They seemed to be skeptical of the value of Take Two holding out on the ERTS offer just because of Grand Theft Auto.

The new buzzwords are “buy the dips”; don’t go out on a limb, but how low a dip will you get, ie see MON, MOS, POT, AGU, TNH, TRA in the ag sector. No one mentioned buying this dip.

After hours, V and FLS beat earnings, but V was down on lowered forward guidance, while FLS was up about 10 pts at a new high. Oil and gas exploration stock McDermott, MDR, was off 15% or so after hrs on lowered guidance. Of course, the traders, long-time MA and V fans, now wonder “where will their growth come from?” Funny, they didn’t ask this about Microsoft. Wonder how much they’ve cost viewers on MSFT alone?

Tim (in for Pete) says if the dollar rallies commodities may fall. Guy thinks it will “rip” this year due to European bank policies.

Guest chartist Dan Fitzpatrick sees the SP up against resistance (around 1400-1410, which are 1999 levels), thinks it will fall, but sees GOOG and RIMM as buys. Of the two, the RIMM chart looked safer.

The traders took it on the chin for the Microsoft cheerleading, from Erin Burnette, filling in for Dylan Ratigan, who is taking his red leather “Pope” Prada shoes all over the late night tv scene apparently. Of course, now that it’s down 6% today on disappointing revenue, the traders think “its even more of a buy down here.” Personally, I just want to know if they’re getting money, stock, or ads purchased by MSFT at this point; they may as well all be employees. I’m sure an annual subscription to all MSFT releases is still worth a few Franklins, it used to cost about 10k per year. (I worked for their software manufacturer once, Stream International, we had their entire software “library” available for checkout and install, and got all new releases for “cost”, a price you don’t wanna know! I think I got Office Developer’s Edition for $40, new and sealed.)

Jeff would sell YHOO here, but angrily and in a loud voice, the same one you order Starbucks (SBUX) around with (“I coulda fixed em, if they’d only listen to me!.. and free, too, I might add.”) Guy still like rail equipment, espically WAB (Wabtech now, used to be Westinghouse Air Brakes, or WAB)

The gang touted coal equipment again: JOYG (Guy), and BUCY (Pete). Also natural gas, no stock mentions but they like CHK. Why not NGS or USG I wonder? They also think the fed rate cuts are essentially over.

Fast Money and Microsoft recap - Thursday 4.24

Well, the Fast Money experts got their wish as MSFT was up 1% today, then after hours Microsoft reported mediocre earnings guidance and was down 4-5% for a down day. Of course, they would all “buy the dip” as well, apparently being completely “married” to one of the largest companies on the planet. This is gross commercialization at its finest. The FM traders are fast becoming a contrary indicator, or, do the opposite of what they recommend.

Meanwhile, American Express beat estimates and was up 4-5% after hours; funny, no traders even mentioned their earnings were coming until after the fact – gee, thanks a lot guys! Now that its up 4 pts today, they did mention Visa earnings coming out in a week; they also noted that MA hit a new high at 241 today, thanks Guy.

MER apparently rose nearly 10% because, as Karen said, “apparently all you have to do is re-affirm your dividend again and in a louder tone and your stock will go up.” Jeff is skeptical of the “once in a lifetime chance” to get financials cheap, reminding everyone that they said the same about the Long Term Capital firm’s collapse. They noted that the fed will probably cut ¼% and talk about “that’s enough unless there’s an emergency”, or, in other words, “we need to cut more again.” (smart thinking… can’t go wrong there!)

China was up 9%, but curiously NOT the Chinese funds or stocks here, so apparently someone is colluding to keep the stocks down here; the FXP (ultra-short China fund) was only off about half a percent, when it should have been down at least double-digits. Meanwhile some big Chinese stocks like CHL (down 3) and CEO (off 10) were hammered down instead.

Commander Planet (Pete) sees MON, for its seeds, and SSL, for its fuel conversion, as the best ways to “go green” with rising fuel prices, and also buy BNI on pullbacks. In fact, the panel constantly said “buy on dips”, in other words, only buy the stuff falling, don’t buy the stocks that are rising, unless its AAPL or MSFT or some sponsor.

Apple was up, down, then eventually flat after hours after a robust beat on revenue and EPS, but as usual, low guidance looking forward. The traders said they always under promise to they can over deliver, nothing new there. Guy said buy at 155, ironically that’s about where it got after hours before buying sent it back up to 162. Meanwhile, SBUX fell 10% on disappointing earnings, blaming consumers, while an angry Jeff Macke said “sell, they won’t listen to me to I’m done with em! AMZN was down 3-4 pts on its earnings, but the traders said buy it.

Jeff also thinks BUD is safe, not connected to “consumers who don’t want a latte”. Guy thinks FCX is a buy with gold losing value, which guest Dennis Gartman also recently sold, thinking it can drop another 40-50 dollars. He thinks commodities are breaking down, and wonders now if oil is too high. He thinks the dollar will strengthen. In casual dining, mentions were EAT, YUM, and Cal Pizza Kitchen (CPZ?)

Yahoo earnings were received with a big yawn. Karen said “needing to impress Microsoft to get a better offer and this is the best they can do?”. Jeff said “predictable”. Someone said CME would go down no matter the earnings. Pete said stick with (show sponsor) Schab (SCHW). Guy says T is cheap here.

Analyst Gene Munster (not from the tv show) made a good case for Apple before earnings, citing prior history, new PC sales, etc. Jeff is cautious (as always, he also said avoid GOOG before earnings), would only buy on dips (still no GOOG either 100 pts higher), but Pete and Guy would own before earnings. Karen says “no man’s land” for her, but she’s confusing her gender. Jeff and Karen would also buy dips in financials, though Karen is still short COF.

Mr. Ambassador Tim Seymour made a pitch for Russian oil stocks, including the only ones you can trade here: LUKOY and GZPFY (pink sheets! Yikes). He also likes COP due to Luk exposure, and Russian etf stock RSX due to its 52% oil and gas holdings.

Pete as Cmmdr Planet (and his lost planet airmen?) talked about hybrid cars, likes the stocks ENER and ENS due to work with auto solar power (ENER makes the batteries).

Guy still thinks the SP500 is on its way to 1410, and that it will either break through that resistance or will fail and fall back again. (Please see 1999 in a 10 year SP chart, we’re repeating history nearly a decade old!).

TXN had weak earnings after hours, most felt like it’s a “Texan problem, not all chipmakers” (Jeff), Guy agrees, but Pete thinks all chip stocks are going to lag. Neither is bullish on financials, though Pete still likes MA. Guy likes GSK and GILD in biotech.

Pete raves on and on about coal, adding Carter Worth pick ICO to his list (due to call buying) that includes MEE, BTU, ANR. What, no ACI, no FDG? (I’m long FDG, which pays a nice yield that will increase). Guy added BUCY and JOYG as more coal equipment plays.

All the traders would buy YHOO here; before earnings? Dang, that’s risky. They think YHOO will beg, borrow, lie, and cheat to get out a good EPS report with the MSFT offer hanging in the balance.

Pete also noticed call buying in Radio Shack (RSH), but wouldn’t chase it. I wouldn’t either, it’s about ¼ its value of the mid-80’s, and never recovered from 1987. Pete likes NBR before earnings tomorrow (I’m long RIG myself)

Tech analyst (Quint Tatro? Is that a name or a Brazilian company?) likes the DRYS chart. Jeff says “why buy ships when you can buy rails?” Apparently no one told Jeff that rails can only get the merchandise inland AFTER its been shipped to the ports. Quint would sell the SP500 into strength however. He also says buy GLW on a breakout, which he expects. The CEO of toy maker Hasbro (HAS) was on to tout product lines from upcoming movies (“Iron Man”, “Indiana Jones and the Action Figure Toy Line Movie”) due to the success of Transformers. Wait a minute, was that a movie based on a toy line from years ago? The line is getting blurred between fantasy and action figures…

GOOG exploding after hours, beat earnings by .30 or so, up from $50-70 per share so far. Guy thinks SP goes up to 1410 now. Most think this will help the market tomorrow, maybe not MSFT or YHOO, the gains could come at YHOO’s expense.

Guy likes MER after their write-down and layoffs, good value. Jeff still says the negatives are still in the stocks, can’t come up with much more negative news, and Citicorp (C) won’t blow up tomorrow. He and Pete would buy financials on dips. Karen says the terrible numbers aren’t getting much negative reaction in the stocks, and Jeff says that reaction is bullish.

After Hours
Pfizer (PFE) misses, at lowest price in 10 yrs, losing patent protection to generics.
TD Ameritrade profits were up due to increased stock trading, which could be at ETFC’s expense; both are up after hours. SNDK up after hours, but the traders would pass, Pete says too much competition. ISRG down big a.h. on good earnings; the TD Ameritrade a.h. analyst says a lot was related to huge put option positions; Karen says they just reiterated guidance, and didn’t guide higher.

Intel helped drive the market today with last night’s earnings, but Tim (in for Jeff) seemed to think this was a short covering rally and its suspect. He also thinks steel and infrastructure stocks show there’s no worldwide recession. Carter Worth (in for Karen) thinks steel is over extended, would avoid for now, but may be a good hold long-term.IBM was up after hours tonight on similar earnings, but EBAY was getting a mixed reaction from theirs. Most agreed that IBM and tech were separate markets, Carter in particular didn't think it was as good for tech ("DELL is a bust") as it is for just IBM. He doesn't like PC makers.

Guest Dennis Gartman is still long oil, avoiding other commodities for now. Guest Adam Johnson made a case for GOOG using the PEG (the PE ratio to the earnings growth rate, a good over-valued indicator, but needs reliable earnings estimate to work properly), which is lower than those of Apple, RIMM, and Microsoft. PEG and forward PEG are “quant analysis”, which failed last summer and blew apart many hedge funds using it; many were laid off, remember? Guy reminded everyone that stocks can still go up in a recession. Not only that, but there’s always something going up, now that there are short etf’s available.

INTC was up after hours on earnings, about 7%, so the traders said it may start the market with a boost tomorrow. However, they weren’t so high on IBM before earnings, comparing it more to Oracle (ORCL), when it had a flat report and dropped after hours. Pete did see call buying in IBM, and put buying in MER (Merrill Lynch).

Karen is still short Capital One (COF), even though financials are acting better lately. In fact, Jeff said that “the bad news is not only out but also expected; I’m not sure that MER can say anything else that will drop the stock more.”

The founder of the new solar etf (symbol TAN) was on, but the stock only went from 25.84 open to a 25.98 close on 98k shares, hardly a "real" ipo. He said it represents 25 solar stocks and equipment makers. No one seemed too excited by this, but Karen appropriately asked if one could buy PUTS on it yet! Personally, I'm waiting for the ultrashort solar fund: BURN!

Today, GE clobbered the market with missed earnings, when they usually under-estimate so they can over deliver (“sandbagging”). The stock experienced its biggest drop in 20 years, off 4.70 (12.8%) at 32.05. Since GE owns NBC and therefore CNBC, the traders are likely prohibited from directly offering buy or sell advice on the stock, but I can tell you for them, “Avoid or sell”, if you haven’t already. Anyone trading stock should have some type of stop loss limit, so a drop of 12.8% should have triggered all but the most obstinate of stops.

Jeff still likes USO and GLD, but says “forget individual stocks”, too risky, but he loves the chart of WMT. Tim likes copper, specifically FCX and PCU. Jon Najarian, still here for Pete (and still with a ridiculous attempt at a pony tail – hey Jon, you need LONG HAIR first! You can’t make a KNOT into a tail, dude!)

Jeff mentioned they were “updating the virtual tv book”, which implies “this” isn’t really what they trade, just what they mention on TV, which is something I’ve told everyone about these financial tv jabbos for years now. Its still my suspicion that they or the show receives stock or ad purchases for their mentions, its all just one big infomercial.

The traders noted a good response to bad retail data. Jeff still says only own HD, COST, and WMT in the retail space. Guy also likes HD. The semis rallied (SMH), the whole panel seems to own INTC based on value. Most are long YHOO but don’t expect much, even though Time Warner and News Corp got into the takeover discussions with MSFT, which may lower their offer.

AAPL and DD either gave or had guidance raised. Guy noted DD has done this twice in a month. Tim also likes SYT in the ag sector; SQM was his “ag play” last time he was here, which has been falling lately. Guy likes EMN in chemicals also.

The gang said avoid DNA, but the MLNM takeover was a good sign for stocks like ONXX (a favorite of mine, I’ll rebuy it now), CEPH, and IMCL. Jon Najarian (in for Pete) says GS is close to a buy for him after its dip from 180.

Steve Liesmann tried to explain the new fed debt swap or whatever the H they’re doing. Some say the “write-ups” may be the next step, and that financials may have put in the bottom. Tim thinks they haven’t yet.

Tim Seymour (sitting in for Karen), thinks China may dive again, but does like certain stocks: SOHU, BIDU, and CHL, which the traders all seem to like -- Yep, after a dip and 10 pt recovery, it’s “safe” to mention again! These are certainly “fair weather” traders. Tim even likes PTR.

The guest technical analyst sees the vix drop as possibly leading to an S&P rally. Jeff and Pete disagree, saying the vix could go up again on a volatile day with a big drop. Guy likes oil services, notably SLB. Pete still likes natural gas, CHK still, ANR on the next dip, but Jeff does not.

Fast Money Madness Winner: GS over MSFT, not even a close vote.

The market started with a 100 pt rally due to Washington Mutual (WM) getting much needed private capital and soaring up 20-30% in early trading. Later the rally was killed by Pete’s favorite “on fire” coal stock ACI, which only fell 2% itself but was used as the catalyst for stopping the market rally dead in its tracks. They also destroyed the solar rally with some likely bogus PR about “they may not get preferential tax treatment in the future”. Since when did energy take a back seat in Washington? That would be a major policy reversal!

After hours got no help: AMD gave an earnings warning, and AA had weak earnings, missing the EPS. Guy says buy the dip (but avoid AMD). Pete saw more insider buying in CHK, still loves natural gas. Guy still likes MA.

Jon Najarian came on and said avoid ag and energy stocks. But he did like PRG before earnings. Pete likes both MS and GS in financials; later GS won the madness tourney.

A guest liked the drug chances for WYE and ELN, for Alzheimer’s but I’ve seen some pretty negative analysis on the internet, and their still awaiting Phase II data, they haven’t even started P3 yet. Guest techical analyst Carter Worth from Oppenheimer said to avoid consumer staples here, but watch laggard stock ICO. Meanwhile, choosing a laggard scares both Jeff and Guy who would avoid any stock lagging their sector, b/c “it’s usually lagging for a reason.”

Pete thinks AAPL is only in the middle of its rally. Jeff likes RIMM instead but warns of the recent 20 point rise that came too quickly. Pete likes SNDK is semi prices rise.

Fast Money traders said it was a slow, take it easy kinda market today, someone said they were “waiting for unemployment numbers on Friday.” Personally, I think they were lulled to sleep by testimony in Congress on the Bear Stearns situation. Get this: it may have just been rumors that caused the run and problems there. Nice system, isn’t it? Even Ronald Reagan said the US markets were “a house of cards” after the 87 crash.

Karen was impressed that the market held its gains (hey, ONE more day to give em back this week, Value Gal!) Pete likes ag stock MOS on pullbacks. The group was higher on rumor of ability to set prices in Russia, meaning “someone we can gouge by jacking up prices artificially – also called ‘capitalism’”. Guy thinks MER is ok here, also AMP in the financial sector.

Guy and Pete like Alcoa (AA), lots of call activity and takeover rumors. Pete says steel prices may be affected by “coking coal” price rises, from CEO of steelmaker MTL. We all know Karen is a “heat-treated aluminum” kinda girl, she likes KALU. (guys love hot shop talk don’t they?)

They started with a graphic that the Dow is down every time Uncle Ben Bernanke testifies before Congress. Today the carnage thankfully wasn’t the normal disaster he wreaks.

Pete says don’t chase solar stocks here, but some have soared. He says the rumor is that they could have the cost down to the cost of coal generated electricity by next year. Guy and Pete agreed that oil services stocks have now broken out to the upside.

Pete likes RIMM here, Guy says sell, up 20 pts too quickly, any good news was already priced in. Pete likes CHL here as a Chinese RIMM play. Jeff still likes USO for a crude oil play. Pete says buy HOC, they process the crude no one wants.

TMA bond deal was seen as good for bonds, bad for shares. Guy likes GLW. In Ag, Pete likes Dupont (DD). Guy likes MON after its selloff.

Best sector after a recession is trucks and parts, 2nd is soft drinks, 3rd is rails. Jon Najarian likes LSTR here and NOC in the defense sector. Some analysts says the new Apple 3G phones are almost here, you can’t find iPhones in stores. Several like AAPL here, but not Jeff. Jeff says watch KMX. Following Ackman’s investments, a couple like Target (TGT).

The market jumped big on positive manufacturing data, for whatever the "estimated, unrevised" data is worth. Apparently the market wants to continue to have BIG Tuesdays, as a viewer, "Chuck" eMailed the gang on Fast Mail. He noted three Tuesdays in a row with +300 Dow days, only to give most of it back on Thursday and Friday the same week. We'll have to see this time.

Jeff says buy USO as an oil play, have a stop at 95 on oil, but he and Guy think GLD is a sell. Guy says buy GSK in pharma and continues to like BWA in auto parts, still avoiding manufacturers. The whole panel likes MS and JPM, and all own MSFT, now favoring it over YHOO (but 3 own that too!)

They showed some sector performances for the year, tech was off the most, down 15%, and consumer staples were down the least (none were up), off 2.6%. They incorrectly identified "only 4" country funds that were up the first quarter, but there were six: Chile (+13%), Mexico (+11%), Sweden (+2.9%), Switzerland (+1.7%), Taiwan (+13%), Thailand (+1.8%).

Guy added WAB and TRN as new rail picks; he’s never mentioned WAB before, one to watch.

There was a mixed reaction to the Burger King (BKC) “Whopper Bars”, Jeff said “too much like casual dining”. Jeff also said wait until next quarter for any recovery in the financials. Jon N likes AET and healthcare. Karen likes mortgage stocks like FNM on their selloff. Pete likes the lower PE ag stocks, mentioned AGU, but not higher ones like MON or MOS, “ahead of themselves”. Pete said MOT and PALM have been killed by RIMM and AAPL. Jeff said sell IACI, any breakup wouldn’t make it worth any more.

Dennis Gartman said he’s "long of" corn and "short of" soybeans and wheat. (Yeah, I ain't got any soybeans or wheat either!)

The panel agreed that the market indicators were confusing. The investment banks made their first round of mortgage funding from the feds, Steve Liesmann confused everyone with his take on it, but the implication was that commercial entities will make money on all this, a few % points as usual. They said surprisingly that technology stocks were off 15% in 2008, while financials were only off 12%.

In spite of that, everyone still likes ORCL, who had their price target raised by analysts, yet it took the Nas down more today than the other indices. Pete said there was call buying in NVDA, maybe a takeover target. He still likes natural gas also. Pete likes LLY in the pharma sector due to a blood thinner.

Tim said SQM was an untold story, ag chemicals in South America, it’s also up over 45% this year. Tim like TKC as a play in Turkey (a phone company), but be careful of EWZ (Brazil) due to over-regulation, watch stock CIG for this.

Jeff likes COST, WMT, BJS, GLW, and HPQ as “new consumer” plays on stuff being just “good enough”. DSW removed guidance, not good they said. TMA got some financing, but Tim says it's "high yield debt, not good for shareholders", so the stock was hardly reacting after hours.

RMBS was up big in a huge court settlement, Pete said buy puts if you go long. Jeff says avoid TTWO on the ERTS takeover, get NTDOY and ATVI instead. Dennis Gartman is getting smaller with trades, long DCR and SDS (short the SP500), does like copper stocks.

They wasted a lot of time on their “Fast Madness” stock tournament, predictable results.

The Clear Channel (CCU) deal seems to be “done”. The stock is falling big after hours (off 25%), and the gang noticed late day selling like “someone knew”, and Pete saw put buying as well, likely using inside information. Karen thinks it’ll go still lower than the 26 after hrs price.

The group likes the steel sector still, mentioning X and NUE, but Pete says to buy puts, they won’t go straight up. (Does anything except the national debt?) Tim adds iron and coal to the steel breakout, Pete adds natural gas (mentioning ADP and EOG). After the Boone Pickens “wind energy” infomercial, Pete said FPL has some wind power investments, go with them cuz you get mucho other stuff.

The whole posse likes ORCL before earnings tomorrow, so is everyone already in the trade? Pets noticed option buying in tech stocks Honeywell (HON) and Optivision (OVTI), which he’s long “of” (Dennis Gartman shoutout), and said they make digital camera chips. Jeff likes Corning (GLW) for its flat tv screen business.

JPM helped the market by raising its offer for BSC, which jumped over 90% as a result. Karen thinks we may get to resest the lows again, though the return to normalcy in credit markets could be the market’s reversal. Tim (sitting in for Guy, on vacation) notes SP resistance at 1370, only 1.5% up from here, but that the market “could rally 5-6% from here”. Jeff says bear market rallies are quick and severe, making it tough to be short.

Tech was actually up 3% today. Jeff says ORCL will beat estimates, and that AAPL is a buy, but GOOG is a sell (up 25 or so today). Jon Najarian (sitting in for Pete) says there was a bullish signal for stocks put in: a 1% SP rise on a day with a 2.5% drop in gold; market usually responds with a 12% gain from there. Jeff as usual, says “sell the rally”, also sell WMT in its rally. Jon noted call buying in builders, watch the XHB index fund.

Tim likes these Taiwanese stocks: EWT (country etf), CHT, TSM, AUO, SPIL, ASX. In refiners, he likes VLO, COP, and TSO (too many shorts). In commodities, he likes KOL, BHP, CVRD. Karen likes SUN, VLO and TSO. Karen sold her FNM.

Tech analyst Carter Worth said buy materials, the XLB, on this dip; also coal stock ACI, but sell rallies in financials. He showed the trendlines on charts with each at a buy or sell point now.

The panel seemed to think that the Fed will now provide a floor to the market with its expanded refunding of credit markets. Jeff thinks they reversed trades that worked and you can now buy financials and the U.S. dollar, sell commodities. Steve Liesmann said the Feds expanded their credit swaps to include CMO (mortgage debt). In spite of that, Pete thinks the SP is at resistance and would avoid financials himself. Most think gold likely to keep falling. Pete did see call buying in gold miner NEM. Jeff thinks the fed has bottomed the dollar.

Tim thinks POT has pricing power, buy the dip. He still likes Taiwan also (EWT).
He also said there’s more money on the sidelines than any time since 1997. He's buying more EEM, and starting to buy PetroChina (PTR) due to overselling.

Guy noted that FDX was up on bad news. Pete thinks airlines need to merge to survive. Guy said buy JOYG on the dip, more falling to go. Retail jumped today, Jeff reitereated his buy in WMT. Guy again said HD was cheap, but Pete prefers LOW. Jeff and Guy like ORCL. Guy noted a steel shortage, buy X. Tim likes RIO.

Guest Whitney Tilson says he’s reshorting financials, especially LEH, BSC, MBI, PMI, RDN. He thinks we’re in the 3rd inning of the mortgage crisis, this is a “classic dead cat bounce”.

Just like Pete said yesterday, the market had gone up too far too fast. Tim and others say avoid commodities, as did guest Dennis Gartman, the commodity specialist. Gartman said to sell gold (GLD) and commodities. Apparently they’re being hit due to worldwide recession. Jeff also says short GLD, and sell USO. Guy said to buy ag stocks on the big dip (they were hit about 6% today).

Pete noticed big put buying in MER, and thinks you can short financials as well. As for MS and good earnings, only Guy thinks it’s a buy, while Jeff, Pete, and Tim all say sell. UBS was mentioned as being more immune than most (Guy said “a buy”), but its still a bank stock. Guest Jeff Hart said to avoid lending banks in particular, they haven’t done the quick write-downs like the investment bankers. He does think JPM is a buy, but none of the others.

Tim thinks China a definite avoid (short FXI?), and Brazil has more falling to go, but likes Russia and Taiwan here (EWT). Tim does like TS on dips.

Pete thinks the 700 pt rally in 2 days may be too much too fast, be careful. The panel was mixed on whether financials had put in a bottom yet (XLF was up 8% today). Pete summed it up best, “buy puts if you fell like you have to own financials.” Or you could buy the SKF double-short financials etf. They seemed to echo the sentiment that MS was a buy before earnings (Pete says sell MS if up), and that JPM was a winner both in the BSC takeover and the Visa (V) IPO, which priced above the expected range of 37-42, and will go at $44 per share, if you can get ‘em. Guy wouldn’t chase them in the market, but would buy on dips. Pete thinks it’ll be a blockbuster, buy when it trades, eventually another Mastercard (MA). Guy likes financials, Tim is long MER. Guy still likes USB, Tim says regional banks are good buys. Jeff thinks you should buy financials on dips, but not LEH right here, up too much since the bottom, 100% in 2 days.

Tim (for Karen) thinks treasuries will go down, the dollar up. He says avoid FXI (China index) but still likes China Mobile (CHL). Jeff says bet on the feds, buy all the battered groups, and throw in WMT. All see NKE as a buy before the Olypics also.

The guest technical analyst sees the market going back up, due to volatility index and recent history, and also likes GOOG for the same reason, its mirroring the market’s chart.

The Feds allowed JP Morgan, with their backing, to take over trouble Bear Stearns (BSC) for $2 per share, so the market was understandably disconcerted by this news, as fears that it may spread rippled around the world. Suffice to say that the losses backed by the fed are paid by all taxpayers, even those who can’t invest, hence the aversion to bailouts in general; most people say “let the wealthy corporations pay for their own mistakes”, but then, the Constitution says the government is formed to “provide for the general welfare”.

The panel said that J.P. Morgan made “the buy of the century”, and with a federal put as protection. Jeff said buy Goldman Sachs (GS) with a stop in the 130’s. Guest Joe Terranova (sitting in for Karen) said “get a wish list ready”, but to also be out of commodities for now. Jeff still says buy or add to USO and GLD on dips. Pete says if you buy refiners, like TSO and VLO, use puts for protection.

Dennis Gartman said he took off some commodity longs, like DBA, a commodity etf. He says to sell the long etf stocks for now, go to the sidelines. He does like JPM here, getting Bear Stearns for nothing.

Jeff liked the INTC action all day, resilient. Pete noticed put buying in railroads like BNI and CSX, which Guy likes. Someone said even the “bears were getting bullish”. Jeff said to cover all LEH shorts, take your profit and be happy. The stock rebounded from a low of 20 today to close at 30. Pete likes the lack of panic in IBM and AAPL, Jeff said the same of WMT.

The panel said that benign inflation data was more than offset by the panic generated by J.P. Morgan and the feds bailing out Bear Stearns, whose stock plunged 47% to 30. Pete said that volatility rose to 700% on BSC, then fell back to 200%, and someone was buying puts all the way down to a strike price of 5 in the stock, also he noticed put buying in LEH from 40 down to 25. UBS was also sold because they shopped their Paine Webber brokerage unit and could find no buyers.

The market reversed an early loss when Standard and Poor's said the "massive write downs may be coming to an end" or something similar; the market reversed and ended up slightly. Bear Stearns (BSC), may have had a "washout" day, Pete says it dropped to 50 on huge volume, also put buying, then rebounded to close off 5% at 55; he said there was "definite capitulation" today in BSC. THey also said the XLF spiked off its lows, and GS was a buy at 155, maybe put in a low there.

Guest Joe Terranova sat in for Tim/sitting in for Jeff. He said the SP needs to go through 1330 upside. Guy likes GLD here, FCX for metals, and steel plays NUE and X, along with guy. Joe T also likes FCX, added copper miner PCU. Pete says sell BNI at 92, buy the next dip, keep doing that. Guy says nat gas continues to work, and favorite CHK (Pete loves this).

Guy still likes MA, noted the intraday gain today. Pete trumpeted the VISA IPO coming next week; Dylan said “we’ve got plenty of time for that later.”

LUV dropped on planes being recalled due to lack of proper service; Tim likes BA as a result, says Russia need to replace 900+ airliners. Guy likes COL, same sector.

Karen again noted insider buys in CROX, Pete said there were more in CHK, up again today.

Guest Jeff DeGraaf noted the put/call ratio is now in contrarian bearish area; also says the advance/decline line is getting bullish due to breadth. He says XLF will go up from here, Pete disagrees, no bottom yet he said.

Pete and Karen liked MSFT again (time filler?), still off more than the YHOO offer. Tim likes LFC but is generally down on China’s market overall, so sell the FXI, buy the FXP?

Tim started an emerging markets 20, but they only got to two: TSM (Taiwan semiconductor) and ERJ (Brazilian aerospace). They posted the rest at the CNBC site! What a ruse…

The market reacted to another Fed liquidity injection with a 415 pt, 3.55% gain in the Dow, and a 3.7% leap in the SP500. The panel said it was a unified bank injection that also involved the Banks of Canada and England, or the rally might have fizzled; the whole goal is to inject liquidity into the credit markets, they will apparently now swap US treasuries for mortgage paper! What Next? Karen said “we’re only back to where we were last Tuesday.”

Pete thinks maybe healthcare selling is overdone, mentioning HUM, UNH, and AET, not connected to the same business that rocked WLP shares. The whole panel seems to think HUM selling was overdone, especially Pete and Guy.

Tim said if the market jumps up again, he may initiate new shorts in emerging market shares; he just went long EEM yesterday by shorting EEV to get 2x leverage; nice move, the EEV was down over 10% today. Pete says there could be a gold squeeze. Guy likes SLB still, in oil services; meanwhile Pete says sell the OIH (oil svcs etf). Doug Kass (and Karen) say sell USO, oil ready for a pullback.Guest Jon Najarian also saw put activity here and agrees.

The panel has noticed insider buying in CHK, XTO, and AEO. Pete and yesterday’s guest chartist love CHK. TTWO is up after hours, upgrade in outlook and still rejecting the ERTS takeover offer. Pete says funds are selling TTWO big time. CPHD was down big on drug testing. Jon Najarian saw big put buying in Williams-Sonoma (WSM), WM (Wash Mutual), and Fannie Mae (FNM), would sell all these on rallies. Tim is now covering his EEM shorts, and Karen is covering her small-cap shorts. After hours, TXN and WCG are off big. Guy never liked TXN, but still likes tech stalwarts ORCL, CSCO, INTC. Pete says the whole healthcare sector is bad, WCG included. BSC was off big today, everyone seemed scared of it, even though rumors are likely overblown. Pete noticed put buying in LEH, sees no bottom yet, there or banking stocks like WM.

Pete is still long BHI and COP in the energy sector, and AMAT in tech as solar play. Pete sold his MCD but kept Burger King (BKC). He says watch AMGN and DNA on drug news this week.

Tim likes Russia first now, then Brazil (EWZ), and Turkey (TKC). He also like the Yen (FXY) vs the dollar’s decline. As a response to the dip in Malaysian shares (EWM), Tim says buy Taiwan (EWT) instead; or was it Thailand? (TF).

Because of the commodity play, Guy likes DD and POT after their selloffs; Pete says the ag sector “got ahead of itself” and to wait on this group. Tim says simply buy some UNG (natural gas etf), maybe integrated oils; also some soft commodity etf DBA, also likes POT due to China.

The guest tech analyst (missed his name, the one from TheStreet.com), he showed the breakdown in the SP500, but also bullish charts for CHK and JOYG, each connected to the commodity surge, natural gas and coal.

Friday, 3.07, the Dow fell 1.2% to 11,894 and the SP500 fell .8%.

“Definitely a bear market” is the consensus. Most want a bad couple of days, a huge volume down day, then they’ll be convicted buyers again. Even though financials keep hitting lows, Guys sees UBS as a buy. With oil hitting $106, Jeff repeated his USO buy, Guy repeated his BHI and SLM buys, Pete repeated his “natural gas is not over” buy.

In tech, ORCL is getting the most mention lately, just because they didn’t warn, and GS put them on a buy watch or something. Jeff says nibble on GS here also, in the 150’s, and also likes CSCO, no convicted sellers in this downturn.

Dennis Gartman was on the phone, is still short stocks, he likes the SDS. He’s long nat gas, likes Canadian stocks PGH and San Juan. Says AG is overbought, sill long gold.

Jon Najarian guested also, sees call buying in SLB (oil services), S (possible takeover in Spring?), AMLN (also takeover rumors, drug pipeline). Karen also threw in FNM as buying on its plunge, based on LEAP call prices. Jeff likes BUD, SLE, and TR, all consumption stocks, all from the new low list.

Guest Dick Bove sees great opp in buying Citicorp (C) here, lowest price in 10 years, “once in a generation opportunity”.

Thursday, 3.06: The Dow was down 1.75% and the SP500 was off 2.2%.

The panelists said “it’s a bear market, sell all rallies.” Financials are now at a five year low. But Guy said "some stuff is working, so buy BNI and DD, both values." Jeff says GS is getting interesting, but no rush, like Pete, who adds "just wait on Goldman, you’ll get a better entry but its getting close." Jeff said "the market needs two down days, Friday and Monday, lots of pessimism at the open, then buy… "

Guy does like one financial, AMP, which Karen agreed with. As for tech, “its now a value buy”, like AAPL. Pete said add IDCC to the buy list, little known but with big potential. They all seemed to like ORCL before earnings this week. Karen still likes MSFT. Pete noted that RIMM had broken support at 100.

Guest analyst John Rogue said the SP was likely to decline another 3-6% to test key levels. Avoid financials, tech, media; but he was positive on metals and commodities.

Tonights rest in peace segement was on yellow page businesses, expected to hurt RHD and IAR, but both are already down 90% in a year. As a response to that decline, those to benefit were expected to be MSFT, GOOG, VCLK. Pete added MNST and Chinese media play FMCN.

They say buy the oil breakout, Jeff still preferring USO. Guy added BHI, also SLM and HAL, but avoid XOM, and add APA as a nat gas play. Pete says avoid refiners, wait for 5-10% up on a recovery. Long-term, watch XOM. He added that JOYG beat estimates, and BUCY was also a buy in the same sector.

Jeff and Karen like WMT on slowing retail sales elsewhere, but Jeff still likes COST and GPS as well.

Oil surged again, this time to 104. Jeff continues to like USO and GLD, Guy continues to like BHI (so does Pete), and SLM, which Tim liked yesterday (along with HAL). Pete also likes COG due to its natural gas exposure, but he continues to avoid refiners like TSO, VLO, etc.. (must be a crack spread thing.) Some preferred oil services (BHI), which Karen says you may as well get OIH. Pete threw in BUCY again, mispronouncing it again. Pete: its "boo-sigh-russ" not "book-a-russ"; I think Pete believes its another city in eastern europe! (Bucharest, get it?)

Jeff says sell BJS, buy COST if you need retail. Beef got a pop, Jeff likes SFD and HRL. AAPL is now a value play (Pete and Guy agree); it's always something, no matter where it is on the chart. Rather than AAPL, someone preferred JNPR and network plays (Jeff?). Jeff and Guy both said avoid MOT, in spite of Icahn. Re airlines pullback, Guy likes BA, PCP, COL, and Karen's KALU (heat-treated aluminum, baby... HOT to the touch!)

Markets were down only .35% on Tuesday, Guy thinks the SP held an important level at 1310, and that it should be a buy here at support, and that CSCO is also a buy. Meanwhile, the XLF hit a new low since the August 07 low, led by Citicorp (C), down 4%. ABK was up, now they hint "we'll bail em out"; Karen covered part of her LEH short today, "maybe the selloff is overdone". MER was up 2.5%, which Guy likes here, but Karen says be patient, don't rush into financials. Tim (Jeff was late) likes GLD and commodities funds.

Guy says beware of JOYG, their short-lived CEO resigned, due to report this week; he now expects a shortfall, take profits here. Coal was down today, making it yet another reason to buy, according to Pete (the same old names, he says, ACI, Massey, ANR, etc...). The XLB was down.

Over six months, MU is off 41% and SNDK 62%, bad for memory chips overall. Pete says sell MU on every pop. Guy says buy MU on a new low day with huge 50m share volume. Pete still likes AMAT because it went into solar equipment to diversify its business.

Guy likes PEG in utilities, Tim likes DYN. They all said avoid HOT on takeover rumors. Construction is down, Karen says sell UTX, CX, IR, HTZ (rental equipment will be hurt). Guy says you'll be tempted to short JEC but don't.

As for newspapers, Jeff says sell NYT, buy YHOO and TWX instead, new media for a newer age. Time likes TV, CETV and something similar, maybe CEMV or CEMT... Russian I believe.

Avoid BRL (drop) and TMA (drop); "problems at both"... No one liked the AMZN pop, avoid ETFC (drop). Pete says buy the NOK drop; Guy says buy the MON drop, but it should drop more. Today, technical analysis guest Louise Yamana kind of set the tone, with a likely accurate bearish reading of the S&P 500 chart. She said she can see it going to 1200 soon. She also had a bearish chart of the U.S. dollar, showing that’s it never broken it’s downtrend line from 105 to the current 73-4 area. She contrasted these with bullish charts for gold and oil; she sees gold going to 1200 and oil to 124, either sooner or later.

The panel said today’s market rebound (from its lows to even) was a commodity driven comeback and balanced a decline in financials. Jeff and Karen think the market is going down further, Karen says short exchange stocks. As for Goldman (GS), Pete thinks it a buy here, Jeff wants a further decline to test 150; Jeff also sees AAPL declining further with a failure to follow-through Friday’s up day.

Pete did say “watch MSFT and ERTS” re swallowing up their takeovers quickly with few problems. Guy says keep Akami (AKAM) on the radar. He reiterated a buy in Borg-Warner (BWA), or at least “if you want to own the auto industry in any way.”

Karen and Pete think maybe the UTX offer for Diebold (DBD) will be raised; Jeff says, as with YHOO, “just wake up, take the money and move on already…” (He’s got more trades to put on, wants the fast money!)

The market fell 315 pts today, about 2.5% on avg, and Dylan reminded everyone that when they go on the road, like today in Miami, the market has a big down day, so watch out for the next road trip!

They all say build a list to “buy on dips”; I wonder why there’s never a “list to short for Fast Money”? Jeff liks GPS in retail, later added USO; Guy likes BNI, due to “whale-watching”; Karen likes KALU (always), and TYC; Pete brought up coal again, he’s now official industry spokesman (“the same names, ANR, ACI, etc..”) Other “whale” stocks mentioned were GSK, KFT, and YHOO.

Boeing lost a big 40b defense contract to Northrup (NOC) and Airbus; Jeff said “it’s a sad day for American pork when you can’t give 40 billion to a U.S. company”. Guy still likes RTN, says this is not as bad for BA as it is good for NOC.

Pete still likes natural gas too: EOG, DVN, APA, CHK; Guy also loves APA, and get more XTO on pullbacks. Dennis Gartman said “keep it simple: buy GLD, go short stocks with SDS” (which is a double-short ETF). Guy also says buy MO on dips.

Pete now thinks AAPL is a value buy; Guy reiterates buy WDC on dips; Jeff says just avoid tech. Pete likes YHOO on the deal also, long the stock and options. Guy says T and VZ were unfairly beaten up today. Karen likes retailer KSS on dips to 45 (“woulda gotten there today if the market had been open another hour.”)
Guy says get MA after the Visa IPO is absorbed by the market, thinks that’ll pressure it some.

Tim Seymour came on, likes Latin American banks: ITU, BBD, BAM, BAP, CIB. Says the Brazilian etf EWZ is also a long-term buy, that the Brazilian real is up 5% as a currency this year, and that it’s the only currency Warren Buffet owns.

Re homebuilders, avoid XHB, most stocks; Guy says buy HD instead; Jeff says avoid, why bother? Re baby boomers: Guy likes AMP, STRY, and ZMH; Pete likes STRY also, added JNJ and especially PHG, very cheap Dutch stock. All said avoid AIG. Pete noticed heavy put buying in Citrix (CTXS).

The CEO of Ryder, symbol R, was on; says he sees the recession bottom in here soon. Guy was positive on the stock.

After hours, DELL missed earnings but the stock was only off 2%. No panelist would recommend it, but Guy and Jeff said buy HPQ (again). Re tech: Jeff likes INTC (yawn) and Guy likes WDC (Western Digital) even after its rise. Pete likes AAPL now, joined Karen as a long.

Tim (and everyone) likes oil as an inflation play, Pete also likes natural gas, especially COP. Guy recommended APA and XTO again. Tim likes steel but not South Korean PKX, preferring MT. Avoid South Africa for now he says. Guy likes X and FCX in metals, both old favorites (they buy lots of ads!). Pete uses every energy conversation to smoke some more coal, this time ANR and ACI. He also noted call option buying in Ivanhoe (IVN), now around 13.50.

Everyone says sell Sprint (S), the Nextel purchase was a complete write-off, nothing good about this company. Buy T and VZ instead, was the tone.

Novartis (NVS) seems a good buy to Pete and Guy both. Jon Najarian noticed buying of brokers today, likes GS and the Najarian’s are long FNM. Pete and Jeff like Burger King (BKC). They all like food, Hormel (HRL), Campbell Soup (CPB?), and Del Monte (DLM) were mentioned.

Re Brazil, Pete likes CSCO instead, Guy likes PEP and POT, Jeff likes GLD and USO – all as international plays; no one picked any Brazilian stocks, now the largest component of the emerging markets BRIC index by cap, more stock available than China or Russia.

Today oil ran up to 102 before pulling back to close just below 100. The panel all agreed it would likely run back up to new highs. Pete likes XTO and COP; Tim likes RIG, Equitable Resources. No mention of refiners tonight. Jeff says get long oil and short U.S. dollars. He's often recommended USO for oil. Guest oil trader Joe Terranova contributed agreement to this discussion.

Pete (who is long XLF) noticed huge call activity in JEC today. BID's earnings were off and got an avoid from Jeff and Karen. BIIB pulled back on a warning, Pete says buy the dips.

They talked about DELL earnings tomorrow, no one was that excited; Jeff likes HPQ, Pete likes that also and IBM. After hours pop in AAPL and FLS, two that Karen are long.

Tim Seyour (sitting in for Guy Adami) thinks the China pullback is temporary and likes Taiwan as well, EWT; also TS, China Telecom.

Carter was back as guest tech analyst, sees downturn in utilities (XLU), and probably 15% gains in WFT and MT. He thinks oil will be "stuck at this level" for awhile before breaking one way or another.

The panel bascially said “avoid”, while Jeff is skeptical of any IBM announcements, part of their old game he says, issue stock to buy companies, then buy it back, over and over. Guy said “its good for tech” but likes WDC better; Jeff prefers INTC, Karen is long MSFT. Jeff later said GOOG and AAPL were scary, either sell or avoid.

Homebuilder chart is turning up (XHB), Guy likes HD on pullbacks, also POT and BHI. Jeff says get USO and avoid individual stocks, while Pete says XTO disproves that argument, buy on its new highs.

Pete says negative sentiment is off of FRE and FNM, but wait to buy, maybe summer. Get stock traders like NITE and AMTD, Schwab. Jeff screamed “buy GS at 160!”.

For inflation protection, Guy likes defense, like RTN; Pete likes food: HRL and HNZ, Jeff likes the funds GLD and USO, Karen like bond fund TIP (inflation protected treasuries.) They all like MER later this year if the write-downs were overdone for the mortgage mess. Pete also like PFE and HUM in healthcare for inflation.

Today the gang seemed more into Karen Finerman’s birthday than anything else, except for Pete of course, back refreshed and recharged from surfing in Hawaii and Welcome Back, Surf Dude!

Guy likes natural gas, but again “avoid gold miners” – recommends BHI, SLB, JOYG. Pete still likes coal, mentioned ACI, BTU, and something call metallurgic coal, dunno if that was a company or sector! Chart of the day was Alcoa (AA), which Guys says “buy”, then Jeff says “sell, it scares me, fell on earnings miss”.

For TakeTwo (TTWO), Jeff says “take the money and run, one product company, no growth, takeover bad for ERTS too”. For Tiffany (TFI), they basically said avoid, same for MBI (which cut its dividend), still no real business in spite of AAA bond rating affirmation.

Lowes (LOW) seems like a good buy to Guy and Karen, who expects bad things from HD, but Guy doesn’t and says its up 20% for the year. MA is going down according to Jeff, with Visa IPO coming out, avoid it for now.

Pete noticed call option buying in NTAP and CCOI both. Goldman Sachs (GS) downgraded its own industry today: MER, BSC, LEH, JPM, and MS. For retailers, both Jeff and Karen said “buy any bad news, nothing’s knocking them down nowdays”, Jeff says a great sign for buyers.

Chartist Dan Fitzpatrick from TheStreet.com likes short etf SDS, double short the SP500; his chart showed it pulling back to its rising 50-day moving average and in a definitely uptrend now (market in a downtrend). He also showed a bullish chart on CREE, says “buy on any breakout”; Jeff also likes CREE. He said the NLY chart, though bullish, had major resistance so a buy here at 21 would stall out at 24 – still a 15% gain, then maybe you can short!

The guest CEO was Mrs. McMahon from WWE (Don's wife), and two panelists like the stock after a tough 2007, and with its 8% yield; it's also up nicely in 2008.

The market was down over 100 pts all day then staged a major reversal about 3:30 when CNBC's Charlie Gasparino leaked a story that some major banks (C, WB, RBS, others he said on Fast Money) were about to finalize a financial bailout plan for bond insurer Ambac (ABK), that should either be a "done deal" or blow up by Tuesday morning next week. The Dow reversed 200 pts again, and d up 98, the SP500 was up .8% also. The Fast Money panelists were unimpressed. Tim says "this doesn't change the business picture going forward, they still have low earnings ahead." Jeff said "sell the rips" again, this doesn't change the problems.

Re high oil prices, Guy said he likes BHI and SLM here, unfairly beaten down (also reiterated buy GLD not mining stocks). Karen says avoid the energy sector; too highly valued. Tim had already said sell South African miners, but stay in the commodities rally for now; the corn/ethanol situation will get worse with 31% of the next corn crop earmarked for ethanol production, shortages ahead.

Jeff and Karen argued with Tim that the US and emerging markets are tightly linked economically, while Tim says that the EM's have the resources that are getting the high commodity prices. In his favor, those markets beat the US market like a "rented mule" (Jeff) in 2007; Dylan said Brazil's market was the best performing in 2008; I thought it was China, I'll have to check, but each one drubbed the US market's paltry gains, so did Turkey and Mexico for that matter. The only market we beat nowdays is Japan!

In telecom, Guy likes T here with a stop at Wednesday's low (thanks for a price, Mr. Negotiator!) In MISFIRES, Tim still likes SHLD as a breakup value play, Guy still like the raging "Phoenicians" of Apollo Group (APOL), but frankly, the education sector's in decline, look at DV also.

The panel noted the stock drop to due inflation fears (market was off about 1%) on Thursday, and Jeff said “wait for a bigger dip” before buying, but don’t short either. Karen said “not much happening” but don’t short commodities into their rally either.

Guy noted that TRN was up, a railroad play, also WDC and said they continue to be buys even though up 3-4% today; also not to buy gold miners when GLD never dips due to bad mining news. Tim says miner SWC is “done”, advises taking profit. Guy says “copper breakout coming, buy FCX”.

Dylan noted they raise tech with “one at a time”, today it was RIMM, and that the rallies don’t last (last was HPQ, before that IBM, etc…) Jeff says sell HPQ and RIMM here – the “tape wins, not tech”. The XLK chart they showed looked pretty bad. Karen says AAPL is ok here, but isn’t buying any more. Not a ringing buy. She is also long WMT and EL; Guy likes WMT, TGT, and MA due to some good retail at the lower-priced end.

The SBUX chart looked pretty bad; Jeff says buy but be patient. They noted that Russia is now supporting US financial stocks with capital! Some say they’re buying FNM and FRE.

Guest Dennis Gartman is long gold and short stocks; says buy platinum and palladium, and short GM. Sees oil breaking out, was short and covered, and also likes soft commodities (MOO and DBA are etf’s for these). Some see copper breaking out – buy FCX as Guy said.

The XLU is down 8% this year, the utility ETF. Guy likes PEG, avoid PCG for now; Jeff added to the letter fun and said “also PG, anything with those letters”. Tim says buy a utility fund, also recommended RWE.

Guy again mentioned FLR, JEC, SGR, and DNA as a gamble on a drug review.

Led by good earnings from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) after the bell yesterday, tech eventually rose today and kinda pulled the market along with it – that was the excuse for a reversal from a negative opening anyway. Guy said the tech rise was a “value play”, Jeff thought the tech rise was “healthy”, and Karen (long MSFT and AAPL), felt kinda “so-so” about it all – not much is really happening according to her. Tim thought today “was a mirage” (Pete is still in Hawaii, but his brother Jon spotted heavy option call buying today in MRVL).

Tim thinks oil is a short-term up trade, Jeff also thinks it’ll go up. Tim’s pick yesterday of RIG before earnings was up 7% today; he also warned of STP before earnings and that one opened down 20% before recovering some back; nice calls TIM, put him on the panel instead of “value girl” Karen; we don’t have Buffett’s time frame on a show called Fast Money!

GRMN rose first on an earnings beat, then plunged during the conference call, something about profit margins dropping next year along with prices; Jeff says its going down further; others say avoid.

Re solar, Tim says buy the STP dip, while Guy likes cheapo ESLR (around 9.50 anyway); Jeff says “stick with CY and avoid the risk” – the sector is off over 30% this year so far, and is no longer rising with the price of oil. Everyone likes Pepsi (PEP), “food and beverage works”, also KO and HRL mentioned by Jeff.

Guest Dennis Kneale came on, likes the phone companies T and Verizon (VZ) on the recent dip, which most thought overdone. Jeff also likes “the Finns” (NOK); we know Pete’s their spokesperson, but he’s in Hawaii; nice to see Guy cover for him. Tim also mentioned VIP, MBT, CHL, NIHD, and AMX. Jeez.. just buy a fund!

Karen mentioned a fund, VIPSX, that helps with inflation investing. Guy likes defense, mentioned LLL, RTN, rest of the sector. Tim said ag plays for inflation: ADM and MON, already moving up with commodity prices. Also Gazprom (GZPFY), world’s biggest nat gas company. (the ADRs are very thinly traded but yield over 9%)

Jeff did a fun “Toy Maker Story” segment, and likes HAS and MAT due to interactive toys coming out. He said the NTDOY interactive game side was kinda done (bad chart there too), but said ATVI and ERTS are cranking out motion/action games like Wii games as fast as possible.

Tim Seymour was sitting in for Pete again. He and Guy got to talk about steel and infrastructure plays. Guy mentioned X again, as well as MDR, FLR, SGR. Time mentioned steelmaker GDB, and other metals plays CMC, X, NUE.

After hours, Hewlett-Packard had an EPS beat, was up 5%; Guy says it’s a buy here, Jeff said SELL, take profits – sell the rips. Also after hours, CROX was taking a 13% beating, one of Karen’s picks; she was looking kinda humble, wants “to hear the conference call, they got some ‘splainin to do about high inventories, etc”; the gang kinda took an avoid approach.

Jeff also said avoid financials, while Guy likes USB and WB here, thinks the dividends are safe.

Some see oil being temporarily driven up on political concerns, not real demand; their guest Armstrong said maybe 110 short term, but 75 long term due to slowing world economies. In this same followup, the gang touted other metals, Karen reiterated KALU as a buy, and titanium companies; Tim like titanium company TIE, also LMT as a defense play; Guy reiterated Precision Castparts (PCP), added defense stock Rockwell Collins (COL). In oil, Tim likes driller RIG and the oil services sector (OIH).

The Hormel CEO was on; when pressed by Karen, he said SPAM was “picnic pork, shoulder meat” – makes sense “shoulder pork ham”, shortened to SPAM. Jeff reiterated his buy from last week, Karen also said she’ll buy in. It’s on the breakfast menu in Hawaii now; look for it across America!

The guest chartist (I missed his name), said the big bear sector is now financials, in particular the big capital market stocks, the broker-dealers (assume GS, BSC, JPM, LEH, MER, etc…)

He doesn’t know the story that ONXX’s drug has been approved for liver and kidney cancer already, today they announced a failed test for lung cancer; gee, so it’s not a “cure all cancer drug”, it’s still approved for 2 cancers already. Now it’s back to the price when the liver cancer usage was the 2nd approval for it after kidney first. (Both in Europe, kidney only here; that’ll be approved in the US one day. I’ve had this stock for good gains so I know the story better than Guy apparently.)

Tim “the Ambassador” Seymour sat in for Pete tonight, and was a actually a little grumpy! Must’ve had to cancel a hot date to be on the air…

The panel mentioned Bear Stearns takeover rumors circulated today, sending financials up – all were skeptical, avoid the whole thing. Jeff said rumors float just before holidays on slow market days.

Best Buy gave another bad retail signal, news may have been built into the price already; Jeff says retail is relatively bullish on dips (always). All seemed to like steel, especially X, also MT (Tim). Guy likes AA due to 25% buyback, makes them a takeover target.

Whale watching gave Karen interest in KFT (Buffet bought some, but not much). Jeff thinks Wal-Mart is a buy before earnings, regardless of what they say, got Karen to agree, and Guy, who also likes HPQ with earnings also on Tuesday. Tim likes Campbell due to int’l sales (CPB), and Karen also likes Heinz (HNZ). Jeff mentioned big Spam sales, esp. in Hawaii (“it’s a delicacy there”), so he likes Hormel (HRL).

The exec plug was for Sony, touting Blu-Ray support victories. Jeff said SNE was a tentative buy on dips.

Special Valentine’s show, with each panelist’s favorite “loves and hates”, stocks that treated or scorned them.
Karen: love is FLS; scorn is HD (“I shoulda moved on”)
Guy: love is MA; scorn is DELL (“just can’t abandon it”)
Jeff: love is MCD; scorn is YHOO
Pete: love is NOK; scorn is MU (“traded it in the options pits over 100”), looks like more free cell service for Pete!

Karen picked some special Valentine’s stocks; Estee Lauder (EL) was also liked by Guy; the others were PG and AGN (which Pete liked due to implant biz). Guy likes rail equipment on dips: TRN, WAB, Greenbriar (couldn’t find that symbol).

Pete’s Commander Planet character returned, this time with an infomercial for solar power. He admits they aren’t making much money yet, and most are hampered by the silicon shortage and cost, but they should have their day “in the sun” one day. His favorite are CSIQ, which recycles old silicon into usable solar chips; AMAT, now gearing up to make solar equipment and getting most of their growth from this sector; and ENER, which he’s touted before, Energy Conversion Devices, probably his favorite of the group. Guy reminded everyone of Pete’s often touting Cypress Semi also (CY), which owns most of SPWR and makes chips for everyone in solar as well has having sold off to a good buy valuation.

Tonight’s CEO “infomercial” was for Snap-On Tools (SNA), gearing up internationally. Guy, Jeff and Pete would all buy them, it’s a guy thing, while Karen is “intrigued” (by guy things?). Intrigued is another term for "avoid". Pete noticed lots of put activity in both UNH yesterday (before news of an investigation as well) and STX today.

The new hedge fund reports noted Buffett buyin in GSK, which intrigued the panel. They panel also seems down on financials now, saying even GS but especially LEH look bad; ironically LEH downgraded GS today. Jeff would sell both. Guy noted the big INTC drop and downgrade from GS, saying others usually follow.

Pops and drops
Jeff now negative on JNY (off 10%) – guess it didn’t “put in a bottom”; sell the group he says, also “casual dining” after the CMG disappointment and drop. Guy got his GT pop, still likes it. CAR dropped 10%, avoid said Jeff, sell the group. Avoid LIZ, down 18%, and that sector, Jeff says sell apparel also.

Wow – did I have a flashback or was this show a rerun with merely a new Commander Planet episode stuck in for info-tainment? Guy trumpeted tech again, saying JNPR and CSCO were going up, and to watch NVDA. No one mentioned BIDU’s huge pop of 25-30 (add in after hours), just the good earnings, nor GOOG’s pop of 20, NOR the entire solar sector pop of 10% overall.

Interestingly, the group revisited AMGN with the CEO plugging away; Pete then reiterates a buy for BIIB, which turned out to have live positive FDA news with a drug for MS co-marketed with Genentech (DNA). The gang said “better for DNA, mixed bag for BIIB, as it will compete with some other MS drugs of theirs. Bad for Elan (ELN).” Guy likes AMGN, GILD, and BIIB in biotech, but tonight was a plug for Amgen so take that one with a grain … (of cheap scotch on the linoleum floor?)

Pete’s Commander Planet character surfaced again, this time with an infomercial for wind power. He admits they aren’t making money yet like solar, but did offer us three stocks to watch that may benefit from increased spending on wind research and power generation:
FPL – Florida utility with some active wind farms
HXL – makes the lightweight, strong ‘aerospace’ type metal needed for the units
AMSC – Am. Superconductor makes the power generation / conversion part possible, working on the technology, and though not profitable yet, was Pete’s favorite of the group when pinned down by Dylan. (ah, that cranky protest singer!) Pete also mentioned Edison Int’l in the article but then didn’t pick the stock.

Pops and drops – Jeff said JNY may have put in a bottom; Pete said BOBE (Bob Evans) is ‘everywhere in the south, I like them’ (can you say “free sausage for Pete”? but there are no BE's anywhere near me in GA...), Jeff said avoid Dean (DF). Guy is counting on GT popping from earnings; Pete seems to like ISRG again (hey, its popping!); no one seemed to buy the FSLR pop, more like an “avoid”.

Expect volatility seemed to be the mantra again. Guy says take profits when things like POT make highs, and Pete said look for pullbacks to get into ag plays like MON and DE, which Guy also likes on dips, along with DOW and DD.

Pete also said buy Guy’s favorite MA on an expected earnings dip (so I guess short first, then cover and go long…?). Guy said time to sell HD, bad housing ahead. All would avoid GM, but Guy again said BWA was the auto play (lightweight parts).

Tonight's informercial featured Pete as superhero Commander Planet, covering planet saving industries; tonight's was on coal (pretty ironic! The industry must've bought a month's worth of plugs on the show.) Pete again said buy coal industry plays on dips: BUCY (an extractor along with JOYG), BNI (transporting coal on rails), Eastman chemical (EMN), making coal “cleaner”. The panel would also avoid WYNN.

John Merriman of MCF (MERR) Co was on, likes TASR, CSTR, and ENER, which Pete also likes but would avoid TASR. Merriman cites strong growing demand for TASR in 40 other countries.

Pops and drops, generally avoid LEH (Karen is short), Q, AIG, NDN, TWX (Jeff likes DIS). But TAP, up 10%, Guy likes along with BUD – can you say “free beer for Adami?” Guy also liked popper PCP.

Tim sat in for Karen today, and also showed an informercial for South Africa. Afterwards he said you could buy the market there with EZA, off 17% this year due to the electricity shortage (warned about in 1998!), and he’s also long GFI, a miner, hurt by the energy shortage, a good buying opp for either stock. Guy added buy the infrastructure firms due to the energy shortage: JEC, MDR, and FLR are his favorites.

The panel touted energy again, allowing Pete to mention ACI and BTU again, as well as COP in oil, which Tim also likes. Guy added XOM as a buy, which Tim seconded. Guy said avoid GM before earnings, and prefers BWA as a play on autos, but Tim said GM is picking up revenue in BRIC countries and is a good int’l play to him.

They mentioned a Blackberry outage, allowing Pete to trumpet NOK for the 274th time. Tim also like NIHD here, a Latin wireless play; other int’l wireless he likes are AMX and VIP (Russia), and MBT. Tim also mentioned foreign stock MTNOY, a pink sheet cellphone company.

The CEO of Potash was on, allowing all to tout POT again, and for Pete to mention TRA margins also, and that AGU and DE report Wednesday. Pete also mentioned that they spotted the pullback today in AIG in put buying last week.

Jeff said AAPL was not off its bottom, and Karen had bought it. Tim said FMX has good Latin American growth. Quinn, the guest technician, said the S&L’s and regional banks may be signalling a turnaround in financials, and pointed the the charts of PBCT and HCBK, which didn’t pull back with other financials in January.

Is it just me or do these guys begin to sound like an infomercial for big tech every night, and can they all really like both CSCO and MSFT? Is this Fast Money or “We Can Wait Awhile For Our Money”? These stocks haven’t been fast money since the 90’s at least, back when the Nasdaq actually went to 5000 – does anybody remember that? Now they’re both “value plays”, apparently the new fast money goes for value and waits a decade – Jeff even said MSFT would be “next December” before really amounting to much from here, even with the YHOO acquisition, which they said would “jump up to 33 and be done with it.” Karen has a “Texas hedge” on the takeover, long both MSFT and YHOO! Plus she finally bought AAPL -- now that's a bad sign!

She was down on the exchanges however, now that the feds have stepped in; she's "out of CME now", but Guy thinks NYX is oversold.

Pete’s double expresso was peaking, and he couldn’t wait to jump into everything, especially coal, touting ACI (Arch), BTU, and ANR. Guy also likes ACI but likes BTU better, and mentioned KSU in the railroads; Pete said “keep an eye on coal, railroads, chemicals”… and apparently coffee! Since the whole gang likes commodities, Dylan reminded viewers of the ETF symbol DBA, which tracks a set, nice chart, upward trend.

They showed a chart of investment bankers (but where was GS, the leader?) stock price performances since ?? – JPM was up 5%, the rest were negative, with WB and C off the most (more traditional banks, kinda apples vs oranges chart!). But you get the picture: buy JPM, short one of the others.

Guest Brian Shaeffer, the technician who called the Apple drop “to 125 at least, buy it there”, now does not like Schering-Plough (SGP) but is long Pfizer (PFE) due to valuation and high yield, above 6%.

They let the CEO of Allergan (AGN) come on to say the drop over the danger of Botox being looked into by the FDA was “overdone”, as usual. Of course, when a drug starts killing people, its always best to sell the stock and buy something else that’s not killing folks, like Pepsi, Coke, or PG.

Pops & Drops:
Jeff said AMD could go to zero! Pete said the FXI drop (China index) of 6% showed that the US economy ripples abroad; we sneeze, they get wet I say! Karen is short SGP (Schering-Plough; gee, the guest is also short – is this one hand washing the other?)

The panel was impressed by the market recovery to CSCO and bad retail news. Jeff and Guy like CSCO here, they all seem to like MSFT, including Pete. Jeff still likes ATVI vs ERTS, sounded like he’s long vs short on those two game makers.
Karen is long WMT (we know Jeff prefers COST but is positive on WMT also.)

Pete is on the refiners, saw call buying in FTO, likes COP after a price drop, still likes APA. Guest Joe Terranova also owns APA, likes FTP also, but would short gold miner ABX. Guy is confused by the sector but likes VLO as “best of group”.
Pete also mentioned calls in coal company ACI, and Joe T thought it was connected to buying in the ETF for goal, KOL.

Pete still likes JBLU in airlines, but is long AMR. JEFF has turned positive on airlines, first time in a year – says “they’ve bottomed baby!” Pete also likes Precision Castparts (PCP).

Karen says short the British pound over rate cuts, the FXB exchange traded fund, but careful, it yields 5%; and she likes Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). Karen reiterated her long of FLS, also likes BR on a dip. Pete likes ANDE , “in all the right businesses now”. Karen is still short REITS, big one SPG and the sector etf, IYR.

Jeff said avoid EDS in P&D, Pete likes the nat gas etf, UNG, in viewer mail.

Tonight the panel had to deal with after hours news that took precedence over the day’s activities, as CSCO had a warning of “challenging times ahead”, and dropping 8% after hrs, dragging down the QQQQ’s with it, off 2%. Karen says she went long MSFT today, Guy says CSCO is definitely a value play now, but Jeff said this “will leave a mark in the morning”. All agreed the market will have major selling pressure in the morning.

DAL was up a little after hrs on takeover rumors; Pete likes Northwest and Delta both, no one else seems motivated, but Pete says the oil price drop is bullish for anyone with energy costs. All said don’t short cruise lines, hunt for bargains, start with RCL. Guy and Pete like the rails again, G mentioned BNI.

Bond insurer MBIA is selling convertibles to raise cash, all panelists said “not enough” to offset problems; stock was yo-yoing after hours; Jeff said “convertibles = bad!”. Jeff pointed to bad retail numbers coming tomorrow, avoid M, which dropped big; make a buy list, they preferred WMT and COST as people will look to buy cheaper.

Warren Buffett said the US dollar would be worthless in 5 yrs of current policies; both Guy and Jeff said too many were short the dollar, it has to turn around from here.

Guy likes action in chemicals, mentioned DOW; Pete noticed call option buying in NIHD. A couple said TWX may be a buy on breakup. Jeff said WMG, down big, had no floor, no support.

Chartologist Louise Yamada again reiterated the breakdown of the SP500, said it was similar to 2000, big pullback ensued from there – definitely toppy action, distribution pattern setting in; she also said get out of CSCO if it breaks 20. (why wait?) She also showed the poor relative strength of financials vs the SP500, another sector to sell.

Jeff: buy SPY if futures down big, sell SPY if not (buy the dips…sell the rips), Guy: buy DOW, Karen: buy MSFT, Pete: buy JBLU due to airline consolidation being a plus for them.

The panel was in their “volatility is here for awhile” rap when the BHP offer for Rio Tinto came in (RTP), which Karen said she’d hold for another offer. CNBC said a 45% premium, on my calculator it was only a 13% premium to the closing market cap – one of us is way off! Guy said get FCX as sympapthy and valuation play, while Jon Nazarian, sitting in for Pete, likes FCX and added CMC, Commercial Metals, which he and Pete are long.

Jeff and Guy like MSFT on this dip, Guy likes CSCO as a good value, even Jeff said in 6 months-1 year, CSCO buyers would be ok. Jon said take profits in JDSU, up after hrs on raised guidance.

Karen and Guy thought NYX selloff (off 10 pts) was overdone, good value here; Jeff also like NDAQ as exchange value, “keep it home” he says (they broadcast from NDAQ HQ building).

Guy likes PCG as defensive utility play, also EXC; Jon and Jeff agreed, someone mentioned the XLU being oversold.

In pops and drops, CHD was up and Guy said “buy the boring”; but Jeff said avoid the ILMN pop, and sell the TM drop even more, “if it has wheels, sell it!”

Today the panel said profit-taking in financials was selective and a reason for the mkt drop. Karen reiterated her short of COF. But Pete reminded all of Guy’s (absent today, Tim sat in) pick of MA, still strong.

They were skeptical of tech; Jeff said GOOG broke 500 and became a sell (he liked it at 515, ouch there); he’s still long YHOO. They were mixed on CSCO, Tim and Pete thinks a good value now, Jeff grimaced, “would take the other side of that”. Most said avoid GOOG altogether.

They said take profit in RTH (retail holders), wait for pullback before be-buying; it was off 2% today. They agreed avoid hotels/casinos, and LVS which dropped 5 pts; they were mixed on HOT after Sam Zell reported a 7.7% stake for investment only.

They touted DIS, with writers strike possibly ending; Karen also put in a plug after seeing Hannah Montana in 3-d!! Jeff also likes DIS here.

Tim likes the etf for coal, KOL for worldwide coal shortage play; Pete also said look at JOYG which makes eq’t for coal mining; Dylan said general agreement there was KOL for the panel.

Karen likes RTP, takeover talk; Pete says good options activity; a couple said the same things about X in the steel sector. Tim liked UL as European defensive play; most said avoid CLX, though the CEO was on doing an infomercial.

In pops and drops, they said avoid these pops: RNWK, SOLF, LFC (high valuation; PE of 45 acc. to Tim). They agreed with the drops on PALM, UAUA, HUM, and PIR (Jeff said “just burn wicker should be their plan!”).

Tim had an informercial for Egypt and the GAF exchange traded fund, with African exposure. Must’ve been placed for the SP SPDR funds! Pete likes AAPL here at 130 – a floor he guesses.

Final trades: Tim said gold miner GFI, which Pete likes, along with ALB (chemicals); Karen says KALU (aluminum play), Jeff reiterated his buy on DIS.
